Based in Rome since its creation in 1884, Bulgari has an extensive history of producing stunning timepieces, but it was only in the 1970’s that it took centre stage with its collection of watches that drew on its jewel and silverware craftsmanship combined with rigorous Swiss watchmaking quality. A Bulgari watch is highly creative yet contemporary in its interpretation of style.
At first glance
Within my reach lies one of only three Bulgari Bulgari timepieces of this kind to currently bless our shores. This fact alone is enough to challenge even the steadiest of hands and on opening the black leather box I can’t help but draw similarities to stumbling across newly discovered treasure. Unfortunately, ‘finders, keepers’ just won’t fly here so I settle for a truly unique experience instead which is no mean feat.
Up close and personal
Despite the reputation which precedes it, the wow factor doesn’t lessen when viewing it for the first time. It is a special edition for a reason and everything about it screams style.
The bold 18ct rose gold bezel, engraved with the trademark name, is a declaration to the fashion world that it wants us to sit up and listen. It frames the silky Australia-Indonesia mother-of-pearl dial which is the canvas for the superb rose gold serpentine design that ebbs and flows across the surface. Within the art world, serpentine forms are known as the ‘line of beauty’ as they attract the eye, which is precisely the effect this timepiece achieves. Finishing off its splendid demeanour, are 36 cascading diamonds entwined within the glorious spirals. Bulgari has certainly succeeded in turning my head – I am excited by this timepiece.
On the wrist
In contrast to the remarkable bezel, the 33mm case, case back, lugs and clasp are made of stainless steel, resulting in a spectacular amalgamation of two tenors. This is perfectly harmonised with the white leather alligator strap that is easily fastened by the classic buckle. Notably, once in place, the Bulgari Bulgari is sophistication on the wrist.
The rose gold crown has a tourmaline gem as its centrepiece. All the dial details are made from rose gold, including the ample sized Arabic numerals at the 12 and 6 o’clock and the neat hour and minute hands. Beauty trumps functionality as there are no other indexes to indicate the time. The watch features an automatic movement and is water resistant up to 30 metres.
This is definitely a beautiful choice piece that can be worn night or day. It has a presence, ladies, so expect to be stopped and complimented.
