Famous for  Certina is the 2014 World Rally Championship sponsor

Celebrating its 125th birthday, Certina’s founding principles are reliability, precision and innovation. The Swiss brand has strong ties to the world of motor sports – over the years Certina has held relationships with Mohammed Ali, Colin McRae, Timo Glock and Swiss stuntman Oliver Keller. The label has always positioned itself at the vanguard of technological evolution using the finest watch components and materials available.

Founded in 1888 in Grenchen, Switzerland, Adolf and Alfred Kurth opened a factory to create components and movements for the watch industry in a small workshop connected to their family home. The creation of their own complete timepieces began a few years later, with brand name Grana (the Latin word for Grenchen) first used in 1906. This was also the year the brothers produced their first wristwatches, at the time a ladies-only fashion.

In 1936 these pioneering brothers created a mechanical first: the digital watch, on which rotating disks inscribed with numbers were used to display the time. Then in the 1950s, Certina’s DS Concept was introduced – a double security system to produce a highly reinforced case – the DS watch range reached sales of one million in just 20 years.

The name Certina – meaning ‘assured’ – was adopted in 1938 and in 1983 Certina became a member of the Swatch Group.
