Want to feel as bold as Vivian Ward sticking it to those uptight shop assistants? Take a look at our watch buying advice and never be caught out at the till again…

We all like knowing a teeny tiny bit more than the shop assistant serving us…it’s a quirk of human nature that we all want to take the high ground a la Julia Roberts in Pretty Woman, or Reece Witherspoon as Elle Woods in Legally Blonde (It’s impossible to use a half-loop stitching on low-viscosity rayon. It would snag the fabric…)

If you want to up your confidence levels when it comes to shopping for watches, there are a few things you need to know. But don’t worry, we’ve got you covered…

Know your Brands

Just because a watch brand isn’t stocked in your local jeweller doesn’t mean it’s not great and worth spending your money on. Research a whole host of brands at a range of price points before making a decision; not only will you be more knowledgeable, but you’ll also be able to compare what you see on the shelves with the wider watch world, which could save you some hard-earned pennies.

And know how to pronounce them…

Before you go rushing to the nearest boutique, make sure you know how to pronounce all those pesky brand names. Nothing will cause more embarrassment than a shop assistant having to awkwardly correct you!

Get the lingo sorted with our essential guide to pronunciation. Technically, it’s not a new language, but you may feel like you’re back in GCSE French with this one…

Know your Complications

If you’ve heard this before but aren’t 100% sure what it means, we’ve got your back. Read our quick answer in the Glossary and then check out some of our favourite watches with nifty complications by clicking the link below…
