What’s not to love? There is nothing offensive about this watch – it is an exercise in clean, classic, understated design. If Holly Golightly turned watch designer, this would be her signature piece

Frederique Constant might not be a name you instantly recognise. That is because this brand doesn’t go in for pyrotechnics or craziness but just quietly commands the attention with well-design watches that also happen to be well made and not at a wallet-crippling price tag.

The Slimline collection is no exception to that rule. And this model is a particularly good example of that understated elegance this brand is so famous for.

Frederique Constant Slimline Watch

At first glance

This watch is the ideal cocktail number. It has all the design codes of a watch to be worn after dark: it’s black, has diamonds on it and it’s on a black satin strap. If Holly Golightly turned watch designer, this would be her signature piece.

Up close and personal

What’s not to love? There is nothing offensive about this watch – it is an exercise in clean, classic, understated design. The one slight downside is that, for £1,850 it is a little steep for a quartz, but that price is due to the diamond indices and bezel. There is also the issue of the date at six o’clock. There are people who think that a watch’s dial is invariably ruined by a date and there is an argument that, given the restraint in the rest of this watch’s look, it should probably have been left off.

On the wrist

Frederique Constant Slimline Watch on the Wrist

Like that perfect dress that you always look amazing in, this watch looks great on. Its slimness means that it appears to follow the curve of the wrist rather than sitting proud from it, as a thicker watch would. At 37mm some people may find that too large for a cocktail watch, which are usually around the sub-30mm, but if you’re used to stealing your other half’s watch then it will seem ideal.

  • The sheer understated elegance and how it manages to create maximum impact with minimal features
  • It’s a lot of money for a quartz
  • The date possibly – depends on your personal view
