There is no darkness to this watch, you simply cannot help but feel joyful gazing at the story it promises to unfold – knowing all will end well
Girard-Perregaux is a brand of evolution, development and absolute class. Currently celebrating 222 years of success through watchmaking of unrivalled influence, the brand is continuously creating chronometers that never go out of style.
At first glance
To look at this timepiece is to know that diamonds reign supreme. With its enchanting dark mother-of-pearl dial the collaborative forces at work evoke a feeling of magical wonder. This is elegant play at its very best. There is no darkness to this watch, you simply cannot help but feel joyful gazing at the story it promises to unfold – knowing all will end well.
Up close and personal
So let’s take a closer look – diamonds first evidently. They cover every visible 18ct white gold surface only leaving the case back free. Even the lugs and digits at 9 and 3 o’clock are blessed with this luxury fairy dust. Ladies, you will be pleased to know there are far too many to count, however, my sources tell me we are presented with 345 of these wondrous beauties.
Despite the dazzle tantalising the senses, it is a soft, gentle and inviting wristwatch beckoning us to visit the harmonious land beyond, which I gladly accept.
We are met with a cloud aperture, peeking out from behind a mirrored moon phase indicator which waxes and wanes above. This watch would certainly not be out of place in a scene from Shakespeare’s Midsummer Night’s Dream.
There are six individually placed diamonds serving as hour markers on the blue mother-of-pearl dial which although are symmetrical their positioning makes time-telling a little difficult.
This aside, you are truly in the sky with diamonds. Two of which also accentuate the seconds and days of the week, the passing marked by small solid leaf shaped hands. Furthermore, the seconds are nestled beneath a sweeping silver rainbow with a functional date window positioned between the two.
The hour and minute hands replicate the leaf form but are delicately carved out which adds more transparency to the watch dial. The Cat’s Eye shaped glass is made of anti-reflective sapphire crystal and is waterproof up to 30 metres.
This leads us on to the crown with its bold and beautiful diamond protruding proudly and perhaps ready to prick a finger or two. Either side you will find pushers to work the other features.
There is a see through case back, usually a favourite feature of mine, but in this instance I have seen more intricate demonstrations of the internal mechanisms elsewhere. I wouldn’t call this a woe, as the timepiece is captivating enough without the need to turn it over.
On the wrist
The strap is a complimentary silky dark blue satin, however, I do wonder if it has enough stamina to wear well. Be gentle with it ladies.
Putting the watch on is a little fiddly, but once fastened you are awarded with another display of diamonds coating both sides of the butterfly clasp framing the ‘GP’ initials. The white gold against the dark blue satin is a glorious pairing.
Its automatic mechanical movement is apt to its fairylike essence, a quartz movement would simply not do.
It is an absolute pleasure to review this timepiece as it entices your imagination, but do not be mistaken, it may be a little piece of magic on your wrist, but it is not a frivolous offering, the reality is evident in its excellent craftsmanship.
