Whilst it’s designed with serious divers in mind this watch could easily be worn for routine wear
Oris is renowned for its production of purely mechanical watches and the signature red rotor it uses in its movements can be seen through the case back of its models. It is also one of the few Swiss watch companies that has remained independent and run by its owners.
At first glance
On first impressions this is an impressive and robust watch, aside from the luxurious outer packaging, it comes in a lightweight hard shell zip box ideal for adventure. Whilst it’s designed with serious divers in mind this watch could easily be worn for routine wear. With its stainless steel case, ceramic top ring and uni-directional rotating bezel the Oris Aquis Date has a solidity about it that makes you trust in its functional abilities.
Up close and personal
To keep this baby water tight it has a screw down security crown and is tested water resistant to 300m. As an automatic watch depends on the motion of the wearer to generate power, the 38 hour power reserve comes in mighty handy for those periods when you do fancy wearing something a little more womanly.
On the wrist
Measuring 36mm this watch fits my wrist well, although the weight takes a little time to get use too as I can never quite forget that it’s there. The stainless steel bracelet is comfortable to wear and is fastened with a folding clasp that has a satisfyingly secure click. The black dial and contrasting Superluminova hands and markers make for great legibility which is a prime consideration for a dive watch.
One small woe for this model is its lack of feminine touches but considering it has a purpose this comes as no surprise. On the flip side, with its durability and legibility it is packaged as a serious mechanical and functional timepiece and most would be pleased to accompany it diving.
- Hardwearing
