A bit like wearing a disco ball on your wrist, the Crystalla has Saturday night written all over it

If you haven’t heard of Sekonda, where on earth have you been? It is Britain’s highest selling watch brand – selling more watches than any other company. Pay a visit to any high street jeweller and you will see its vast selection of watches at budget busting prices. Even at the airport there is no escaping the cheap and cheerful displays of colourful holiday watches – they are quite literally everywhere.

The company started out in 1966 and has had quite a presence in any home with a TV, thanks to its memorable advertising. In the 1980’s comedians including Harry Enfield starred in the ads, and if you have ever watched An Audience with … or The X-Factor on ITV (come on admit it), then you will have undoubtedly seen one of the latest ads for Sekonda or its younger women’s brand, Seksy.

At first glance

A bit like wearing a disco ball on your wrist, the Crystalla has Saturday night written all over it. From a distance it looks like a glitzy watch, but up close you realise that it is actually a watch bracelet hybrid. Let’s call it a watch-let.

Up close and personal

Aesthetics alone, the Crystalla is a shiny, happy cocktail watch. The mother-of-pearl dial and Swarovski crystal detail on the case and the strap are full on glamour and with a simple LBD would look pretty. Crystalla is also available in a vast array of colours so there is one to suit every taste. With such an accessible price point why not buy them all!

On the wrist

Remember those friendship bracelets that were everywhere a few years ago? Well the Crystalla is based on that look, with beads and string being used in place of a clasp. A cute idea, until you try the watch on. The trouble is it is almost impossible to get on and off by yourself. Once it is on, then you’ve got three choices: call for help, keep it on until it falls off or find a pair of scissors. When I realised it was stuck on my wrist I got myself in a bit of a panic, similar to when you get a dress stuck over your head in the changing room of an expensive shop. I couldn’t wait for my husband to get home, so he could take the damn thing off, and even with two of us it was a battle.

Like a Monet painting, Crystalla looks much better from a distance. The ridiculously difficult bracelet makes it an absolute no no for me, although I guess it could get looser with wear.
