An ideal timepiece for lovers of understatement and perfect for day to night this watch is crying out to be accessorized with a plethora of silver bangles

If you are reading this in the UK then British watch brand STORM, which launched back in 1980’s, will no doubt be on your radar. Known for its huge selection of trend-led fashion timepieces, jewellery, eyewear and other accessories STORM references its designs as architectural in form and the Zia model is a great example of this.

At first glance

For a fashion watch brand I am a little disappointed in the packaging, a soft lined silver pouch with the brand logo and a simple Velcro fastener, functional but lacking any wow factor. My first impressions of the STORM Zia is a barely there bangle watch. Its ultra-thin bracelet is as narrow as some of my cotton friendship bracelets and its aesthetic is strikingly minimal. The watch weighs in at just 23 grams, so light you might forget you’re wearing it.

Up close and personal

The Zia features a two hand Japanese quartz movement and quite literally has the plainest dial I have ever seen; no markers, not even a second hand. For those with a more relaxed attitude to timekeeping this may not matter but as a detail queen myself, I like to set the time precisely. The shape of the protective mineral crystal does provide a point of interest as it’s rather unusual. When viewed from the side it has a domed effect with a bevelled edge and when viewed from above it gives the dial the appearance of a circular border – I guess this is an example of the architectural form they talk about! Additional features include a water resistance of 50 metres.

On the wrist

The bracelet is shaped nicely to fit the curvature of my wrist and pivots on a pin set into the case to allow adjustment to most wrists large or small. The bottom section of the bracelet is divided into links, all of which can be used to fasten or unfasten the watch, or removed with the help of a jeweller if you prefer a tighter fit. The round case measures in at a pretty dinky 23.5mm with a height of 8.3mm; both case and bracelet are of polished stainless steel construction.

At first look this watch was far too delicate for my tastes but some unexpected design features had me warming up to it. An ideal timepiece for lovers of understatement and perfect for day to night this watch is crying out to be accessorized with a plethora of silver bangles.
