On first touch, you experience the silkiness of the black satin strap underpinned with leather and simply have the urge to grace your wrist with its velvet sensation
Frédérique Constant presents this black beauty, an exciting addition to its bestselling Double Heart Beat Collection. Although a relatively young brand, introducing its first Heart Beat watch in 1994, Frédérique Constant has earned a reputation as a leading maker of Swiss luxury watches with a welcomed philosophy of ‘accessible luxury’. Passion, design, quality and innovation are present in all its hand assembled timepieces. Equally, its benevolent offerings to children heart foundations bring a real ‘feel good’ factor epitomising its Heart Beat signature.
At first glance
It comes in a plush brown speckled stitched leather zip case with lush material providing ample protection inside. Measuring the size of a sunglass case, it is portable and ever so easy to slip into your travel bag.
On first touch, you experience the silkiness of the black satin strap underpinned with leather and simply have the urge to grace your wrist with its velvet sensation. The strap is light so the weight of the watch lies with the case and mechanics which is substantial enough to demonstrate quality without feeling unnecessarily cumbersome.
Up close and personal
The convex glass is made of anti-reflective sapphire crystal and at 34mm it is pleasingly elegant. There are delicate silver hour, minute and second hands with a solo Roman numeral marking the 6 o’clock hour. The two interlacing hearts that feature at 12 o’clock are literally the ‘eyes into the soul’ giving a glimpse of the movement’s beating heart poetically held on its axis by a ruby jewel.
Fully encompassing the name ‘Black Beauty’, the dial is dressed in a shimmering black mother-of-pearl with a heart guilloché centre and a black jewelled crown. However, this luxury timepiece does not dwell in the darkness but is uplifted by the eight diamond hour markers accompanied with the 48 diamonds circling the bezel.
Behind the beauty, the see through case back offers further exploration of the precision automatic movement that is encased in a motif embossed stainless steel ring. You can see the balance wheel that beats 28,800 times per hour rotating clockwise and counter-clockwise controlled by the hairspring which constantly coils and uncoils.
On the wrist
Easy to fasten, the Frédérique Constant emblem clasp compliments the satin strap superbly, making the inside of the wrist a feature oozing class and completeness.
I really like how this watch feels on my wrist, and although it can be worn daily there is a delicacy to it by its refined design and materials that make you feel ‘special’. There is also something regal about the emblem clasp on the satin backdrop that just makes me want to go out and play polo (and drink Champagne of course!).
Struggling to find woes, perhaps a personal preference would suffice. Although the hearts are splendid, I have never particularly veered towards wearing love hearts, the unromantic in me, but they do serve a purpose on this watch and that I buy into. On the flip side, for the romantics out there, this is the perfect gift from a loved one and I would expect hints will be dropped. A brand that supports charities is admirable and this watch carries the same grace.
