It is highly stylised but will certainly appeal to those of us who fancy ourselves as all action heroines ready to take on any challenge and beat the boys while we’re at it

Better known for its famous Swiss Army Knife supplied to the Swiss Army since 1891, Victorinox first introduced Swiss Army watches to the US market back in the late 1980’s. Since then the brand has introduced everything from household knives to travel gear, men’s clothing to accessories and most recently men’s fragrance. Whilst you may be thinking I thought this was a site about women’s watches, I should mention that a number of its watch models are unisex designs, including the Original Chronograph model.

At first glance

First impressions are good, nice (albeit masculine) packaging. A plush black padded box with the iconic brand emblem embossed on the top and to my surprise the watch itself is considerably lighter than I expected with a pleasing slim grey fabric strap. The Nato style strap has seen a bit of a renaissance recently and is a very practical choice for the brand’s target audience of active outdoorsy types.

Up close and personal

On closer inspection I am a little disappointed with the 40mm nylon fibre case, whilst it may be light and durable, dare I say I would have preferred it to match the aluminium bezel to give a more luxurious feel. The case houses a quartz chronograph movement so would be the perfect partner for a training run as it gives 1/10th second precision timing as well as 60 second and 30 minute counters. The chronograph is easily set using the fairly sizable pushers on either side of a very meaty crown.

The obvious military detailing is what I like best about the dial of this watch. It comprises two layers, one inset with the chronograph and the other with the hour markers which appear to have been laser cut. Prominence has been given to the numerals 3 and 9 which use military typography and lend a certain authenticity to the design. The dial also features a date window at 4 o’clock and the hour and minute hands are luminescent, an extremely useful and now fairly common feature on military themed watches. A screw down case back, scratch resistant mineral crystal and water resistance of 100 metres complete the comprehensive specification of this model.

On the wrist

I appreciate this watch isn’t for everyone, it is highly stylised but will certainly appeal to those of us who fancy ourselves as all action heroines ready to take on any challenge and beat the boys while we’re at it. I love the tone on tone grey and see this as an ideal weekend wear watch as at home hiking up the South Downs as it is in uniform on military parade. Finally it’s worth noting that Victorinox watches have that all important Swiss Made stamp on the dial and come with a 3 year warranty which inspires confidence in their quality and all important after sales service.
